GW14 Preview

Top Captain Picks

1. Eden Hazard vs Swansea (home) - £10.7 (TSB 7.9%)

Averaging 9 points per game in the last 5 GWs, Hazard is in top form. In this time, he has managed 9 shots on target, and created a chance every 24.7 minutes. Up against a Swansea side sitting 19thon the Premier League table, expect Hazard to be one of the highest FPL scorers in GW14.

2. Harry Kane vs Leicester (away) - £12.8 (TSB 38.1%)

Everything is pointing towards Harry Kane returning a large haul in GW14. Firstly, in his past 4 away starts, Kane has netted 3 braces and picked up 9 bonus points. Secondly, in Kane’s 5 appearances against the Foxes, he has registered an astonishing 8 goals and 1 assist. Thirdly, this season Leicester have leaked goals when playing the ‘big 6’ teams (Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham), having conceded 13 goals in 5 games.

3. Mohamed Salah vs Stoke (away) - £9.7 (TSB 47.3%)

The Egyptian flyer is unstoppable at the moment. In his last 3 starts, he has netted 5 goals, with 15 shots in this period. It appears that no defence will be able to keep him out.

Punt Captain Picks

1. Danny Welbeck vs Huddersfield (home) - £7.3 (TSB 0.8%)

After a bright start to the season, Welbeck’s momentum was cut short by injury, which ruled him out of 6 GWs. However, he is available to start again, and with Mesut Özil ruled out of GW14, Welbeck looks primed to return to the starting XI against Huddersfield. Promisingly, he has averaged 11 FPL points per home start this season, with a shot frequency of 1 every 24 minutes, and a chance created every 36.5 minutes.

2. Matt Phillips vs Newcastle (home) - £5.6 (TSB 0.7%)

Matt Phillips has definitely not set the world alight this season, having only managed 1 goal and 2 assists in 12 appearances, with a shot frequency of 1 every 59.25 minutes, and a chance created every 71.1 minutes. However, is recent performances have been much better than these stats suggest. In GW12 against Chelsea, he regularly found space out wide and looked very dangerous. He then backed this up with a solid performance in GW13 against Tottenham, where he attempted 12 duels and nearly netted a goal. Up against Newcastle, who have only kept 1 away clean sheet all season, and who Phillips netted against in his last appearance against them, GW14 could be the one where Phillips re-discovers his best form.

3. José Izquierdo vs Crystal Palace (home) - £5.9 (TSB 0.1%)

Despite the outstanding performances of Pascal Groß, Izquierdo has quietly gone about his business recently, with 2 goals in his last 4 starts. In particular, he starred in Brighton’s GW12 win at home to Stoke. In this game, Izquierdo created 1 chance and scored 1 goal from 3 shots, having could easily netted himself a brace. He also attempted 5 duels attempted made 3 crosses. Expected to start after having been rested in GW13, the Colombian will battle Crystal Palace, who have conceded 13 goals in 6 games away from home this season. Furthermore, his pace and role on the left wing bodes well for his appeal, as he will be up against Palace’s right back Joel Ward, who does not possess much speed, and Palace’s right midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who is not a natural wide midfielder, and may be caught out of position at times throughout the match.

Score Predictions

BHA 2 (Izquierdo, Murray) | CRY 1 (Milivojevic)

LEI 1 (Mahrez) | TOT 3 (Kane x2, Alli)

GW13 Preview

Top Captain Picks

1. Leroy Sané vs Huddersfield (away) - £9.0 (TSB 29.1%)

Rested in the Champions League mid-week, and with 19 points in his last 2 away games, expect Sané to return a large haul in GW13.

2. Romelu Lukaku vs Brighton (home) - £11.5 (TSB 48.0%)

Despite a dry spell of 4 games without a goal, Lukaku netted last GW vs Newcastle, which will give him a great deal of confidence. With Ibrahimović now back, Lukaku will be motivated to start banging in the goals if he wants to cement his place at centre-forward.

3. Alexis Sánchez vs Burnley (away) - £11.8 (TSB 2.7%)

After a slow start to the season, Sánchez is re-finding his best FPL form, with 2 goals and 3 assists in his past 6 starts. During this time, he has fired off a shot every 18.3 minutes and created a chance every 26.6 minutes. He also has 4 goals vs Burnley in 5 games.

Punt Captain Picks

1. Sofiane Boufal vs Everton(home) - £5.7 (TSB 0.2%)

He’s yet to set the league alight, but GW13 could be one where Boufal showcases his class. In his past 2 starts, he has managed a solid 2 shots per game. Coming up against a shockingly poor Everton side who have conceded 11 goals in their past 4 league games, as well as 5 against Atalanta in the Europa League mid-week, Boufal should have numerous opportunities to register attacking returns in GW13.

2. Demarai Gray vs West Ham (away) - £5.3 (TSB 1.1%)

The appointment of Claude Puel as manager has seen Demarai Gray receive more game time, starting each of the last 3 games. In this time, he has impressed, netting 1 goal, as well as having 2 shots, creating 4 chances and winning 13 duels. Coming up against West Ham, who have conceded 7 goals in their last 2 home games, and 10 in their last 4 home games, Gray is likely to have chances to score/assist in GW13.

3. Josh King vs Swansea (away) - £7.0 (TSB 1.3%)

Despite Callum Wilson’s hat-trick in GW12, Josh King could be the man in GW13. Despite having blanked in 8/10 games so far this season, King has shown great signs of returning a large haul soon. In his last away game (GW11), he registered 3 shots and created 6 chances, and this was followed up by an assist in GW12. King also has a good history against Swansea, recording 3 goals and 1 assist in his past 4 games against the Swans.

Score Predictions

WHU 2 (Arnautovic, Kouyaté) | LEI 2 (Vardy, D.Gray)

CRY 1 (Zaha) | STK 2 (Choupo-Moting, Shaqiri)

MUN 4 (Lukaku x2, Martial x2) | BHA 0

NEW 1 (Gayle) | WAT 2 (A.Gray, Richarlison)

TOT 2 (Alli, Son) | WBA 0

SWA 0 | BOU 2 (King, Wilson)

Fantasy A-League 2017/18 Season Preview

The 2016/17 A-League season was amazing. From Sydney FC's dominance, to stunning goals like Cahill's in the first Melboure Derby, we were never short of entertainment and most importantly, quality football. These factors made for a highly enjoyable Fantasy A-League (FAL) season, where players like Ninkovic and Castro consistently returned hauls, and players such as Bonevacia and Barbarouses added some spice with explosive hauls every now and again.

Looking back on last season, there were three very important lessons taught to FAL managers.

1. Premium players are worth every dollar

Last season demonstrated better than any past seasons that the more expensive the player, the better they will do. In terms of the premium price range, it is 250k+ for goalkeepers, 175k+ for defenders, 250k+ for midfielders and 280k+ for forwards. At the conclusion of the season, the FAL Dream Team consisted of exclusively premium players. Vukovic was the top goalkeeper at 287k, the top four defenders were all premium (Wilkinson, Zullo, Brown and Baro), as were the top four midfielders (Ninkovic, Castro, Troisi and Nico Martinez), and the top six forwards (Rojas, Maclaren, Fornaroli, Bobo, Berisha and Keogh).

Consistent differentials were hard to come by, so players such as Nabbout and Hoole were more punts rather than viable long term options. Many inexperienced FAL managers may opt for squad depth, but this is not the best tactic unlike Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Instead, managers should stock up on the most expensive players they can with a very cheap bench. This will allow for consistent performers such as Vukovic, Brown, Ninkovic, Castro and Berisha to fit in one team under the 3000k salary cap, ensuring points each week.

2. Returns aren't everything for midfielders

When choosing midfielders in fantasy football, the first thing everyone thinks is "will the player score or assist regularly?" However, last season, FAL showed that scoring and assisting is not everything for midfielders, and that general attacking threat or defensive work rate can be more important. Doing so will ensure that even if a player blanks, they will still reward you with points.

For example, attacking wise, Nico Martinez blanked nine times whilst registering points of 5+ last season. More prominently, on two occasions he blanked twice, but still managed to returns double digit hauls. Milos Ninkovic and James Troisi were also both excellent examples of the importance of team involvement, both blanking on 7 occasions and still managing 5+ points. Defensively, Rhyan Grant and Josh Brillante showcased how work rate and involvement will result in FAL points. On 10 and 8 occasions respectively, Grant and Brillante did not register attacking returns, but still managed 5+ points. These examples are in contrast to players such as Marco Rojas and Luke Brattan. Undoubtedly, both of these players are quality. Rojas scored and assisted regularly, but his involvement in all attacking play was less than someone like Troisi. Brattan is pivotal to Melbourne City with his superb passing and vision, but he plays too deep to register regular attacking returns, and is unlikely to pick up tackle points due to his position next to Kilkenny who is the more defensive minded player. As a result, the roles they play mean that if they do not register attacking points, they will be unlikely to attain 5+ points.

3. Watching matches is the best indicator of who will be a good asset

You may be wondering how to decide which players are more influential than others. Stats do this to some extent, by highlighting certain actions such as shots or final third passes. However, the best way to gather who you should select in your team is by watching the matches. From experience and having spoken to high achieving FAL managers, we have ascertained that watching matches will make you a better FAL manager. Watching matches enables you to monitor first hand the form of players as well as the role they play in their team. This enables FAL managers insights that general stats cannot provide, such as player movement and work rate.

Now onto the season ahead.

In 2017/18, the old point scoring system has been replaced. The new system of point allocation is below.

With last season's large scorers like Zullo, Ninkovic, Castro and Berisha all owned by around 50% or more each, FAL managers need to look to less own players to allow them to stand out from the crowd. So, here are four players owned by <10% that have to potential to score well this FAL season.

1. Alex Grant - Perth Glory - 120k - Owned 2.73%

The Glory central defender has been a quiet achiever over the past two seasons. Over this period, he has registered a highly impressive 21 shots, capturing his ability for great attacking returns in FAL. Couple this with the defensive solidity of his side, and Grant could be one of the top scoring defenders in FAL this season.

2. Mitch Nichols - Perth Glory - $290k - Owned by 3.87%

After a controversial off-season, Nichols was thrown a life-line by the Glory, and must make the most of this chance to get his career back on track. His quality in the attacking third is proven, registering 11 goals (102 shots) and 8 assists (116 shot assists) in the past two seasons. He has also made 116 crosses in the past two seasons. These stats highlight his ability to both score and assist. Furthermore, Nichols has also 53 successful tackles in the past two seasons, which could see him pick up some handy points in FAL.

3. Thomas Kristensen - Brisbane Roar - $250k - Owned by 6.03%

The Danish central midfielder isn't a huge attacking threat, which would seemingly not make him a very good FAL option. However, he has the potential for regular returns around the 5-7 points mark, and this consistency should make him a great option. This is because his average of nearly 60 passes per game last season will see him attain points, as will his average of over 3 tackles per game, and Brisbane's capacity for clean sheets.

4. Baba Diawara - Adelaide United - $180k - Owned by 9.81%

The Senegalese number nine made a strong start to his life in the A-League last season. In his 6 starts, he netted 3 goals, and registered on average nearly 3 shots per game. In Adelaide's new look side this season, Diawara has what it takes to succeed in the A-League.

Good luck to everyone for the upcoming FAL season.
