Race 2: VIRTUOSA(13)
Race 4: LAKE KINNERET(2)
Race 6: DANZA(9)

The Magic Tips Page by JayEmEe - Winning Form

Magic Tips Best Bets

Race 4: LAKE KINNERET(2)
Jockey: G Lerena   - Trainer: St John D Gray

LAKE KINNERET gave a solid account of himself in that comeback run last time out, when finishing just behind a highly rated sort. He should strip a lot fitter today and on his most recent form, he looks very hard to oppose with Lerena reclaiming the ride.

LAKE KINNERET(2)
Race 5: ELEGANCIA(6)
Jockey: C Maujean   - Trainer: D Sham

ELEGANCIA has made solid improvement since having the blinkers removed in her last three starts. She has had to overcome a few tricky draws in recent times and with this being back down the straight over her preferred trip, she looks to be the right one here with Maujean retaining the ride.

ELEGANCIA(6)

TOP BET
Race 7: MADEMOISELLE(9)
Jockey: L Hewitson  - Trainer: Janse van Vuuren

MADEMOISELLE has been in solid form of late and she is clearly in a good space at this stage of the season. On her latest effort, she appears to have a few contenders held and with Hewitson retaining the ride, she looks the one they all have to beat.

MADEMOISELLE(9)
Race 8: LIFE IS GOOD(8)
Jockey: R Simons - Trainer: B Botes

LIFE IS GOOD has certainly benefitted from the blinkers being fitted in recent times, as he has dropp- ed to a more competitive rating. He has plenty of speed and should love the drop back to the 1000m, where he has won before. On that run three starts back, he looks a big runner here.

 LIFE IS GOOD(8)

VALUE BET (EACH WAY) FOR TODAY:
Race 6: VALBONNE(5)
Jockey: R Simons  - Trainer :R Magner

VALBONNE has impressed in his last two starts in the province. The blinkers seem to have helped and he steps up to his preferred trip today. He has faced some stiff opposition in his time & if reproducing that penultimate start, he should just about win this.

VALBONNE(5)

Neil Morrice: UK Racing Tips - Thursday 9 May 2019

Neil Morrice: UK Racing Tips - Thursday 18 April 2019

Neil Morrice brings us all of his best bets and tips for Thursday's racing at Chester, Chelmsford, Huntingdon, Wincanton and Worcester.

Chester Best Bets

Race 4: MORANDO (3)
Trainer: Andrew Balding
Jockey: Silvestre de Sousa

With his liking of this tight course and proven ability to handle cut in the ground, MORANDO can show that at the age of six he is still getting better. He put in a career best to win the Group 3 St Simon Stakes at Newbury on his final start of 2018 and his trainer excels with such individuals. The horse that could block his path is Kew Gardens but at the respective prices it adds up to go with Morando.

Race 5: IT'S BEEN NOTED (4)
Trainer: Tom Dascombe
Jockey: Richard Kingscote

With five runners in this, locally-based Dascombe probably has the answer. The fact that IT'S BEEN NOTED has previous experience to bring to the table makes him of considerable interest and the Kingscote booking suggests he's the stable's number one. He showed a certain amount of ability on that Ripon debut, will come on for it and has a decent draw from which to attack.

Race 7: CROWNTHORPE (6)
Trainer: Richard Fahey
Jockey: S Davis

I'm taking a punt that the in-form CROWNTHORPE can demonstrate that he stays a mile and a quarter. He greatly impressed with the way he finished off his race at Beverley on Monday and if he can do that on a stiff track over a mile he must have a solid chance of staying an extra two furlongs on this easy course.

Chelmsford Best Bet

Race 2: MASHAM STAR (5)
Trainer: Mark Johnston
Jockey: P J McDonald

The industrious MASHAM STAR has shown a liking for track and trip and may be the answer as he returns to Polytrack. Few horses can stand racing like the 5yo who having run Greenside to a length and threequarters at Windsor on Monday now makes a quick reappearance.

Huntingdon Best Bet

Race 7: PINK SHEETS (11)
Trainer: Mick Channon
Jockey: Conor O'Farrell

Returning from a three month break, PINK SHEETS can uphold the promise of his second career start at Ayr. Pipesmoker and Shantou Vow are interesting debutants from Lambourn but Pink Sheets has worked well on the shavings gallop at West Ilsley and gets the vote.

Wincanton Best Bet

Race 4 No2 CASA TALL
Trainer: Tom George
Jockey: Jonathan Burke

While not having fulfilled the potential he showed in his early career in France, CASA TALL has been rubbing shoulders with decent tackle for quite a while and can now take advantage of a notable class drop. With only four outings last season he has scope for improvement and it was a hugely competitive handicap in which he finished fourth at Haydock last time. Cut in the ground won't bother him.

Worcester Best Bets

Race 4: MERE ANARCHY (11)
Trainer: Robert Stephens
Jockey: Tom O'Brien

Front running MERE ANARCHY failed to justify some late support at Chepstow last month but put in another good run to finish third. He now takes a sizeable step up in distance and can gain a deserved an overdue success.

Super Rugby Saturday Round 13 Preview

Super Rugby - players engage in a scrum

Shaun Goosen takes a look at the Super Rugby Saturday Round 13 match ups. The Sharks continue their tour and will encounter the Chiefs, the Jaguares travel to New Zealand to face the Highlanders, while the Lions host the Waratahs. Check out our preview below:

Highlanders v Jaguares
07h15
Forsyth Barr Stadium

To Win
Highlanders 2/9
Draw 28/1
Jaguares 33/10

Handicap
Highlanders (-10.5) 9/10
Jaguares (+10.5) 9/10

The Highlanders face a tricky test when they host a Jaguares side on the up in Dunedin on
the weekend.

The Jaguares have won all four of their last Super Rugby games on the trot. Gonzalo
Quesada’s men have steadily improved this campaign, putting on a number of good
showings - including last week’s 30-25 home win over the Stormers - to be within a single
point of the SA conference table-toppers the Bulls.

They will pose a real threat to the Landers on Saturday, a team that followed up their
fantastic 52-0 win over the Sunwolves a fortnight ago with a rather disappointing 31-all
draw with the Chiefs; this after leading by 16-points at one stage.

With rain likely, the hosts will depend on the tactical kicking prowess of the likes of Aaron
Smith at halfback. The loss to injury of Ben Smith, most likely for the rest of the season, is a
huge blow for the 2015 champions, who will need to march on without his leadership and
experience at the back.

The winner may well come down to whoever best manages the territorial aspect of the
game, with defence set to play a huge role. With this in mind, back the superiorly coached
hosts to come out on top.
Verdict: Highlanders by 10-points or more.
_______________________________________________

Chiefs v Sharks
09h35
FMG Stadium

To Win
Chiefs  6/10
Draw 25/1
Sharks 27/20

Handicap
Chiefs (-3.5) 9/10
Sharks (+3.5) 9/10

The Sharks will be full of confidence, but it may not be enough ahead of their final tour
game against the Chiefs in Waikato on Saturday.

While they will feel aggrieved at having let the Crusaders pull-off a draw in the dying
moments of their tie in Christchurch last Friday, the fact that they ran them so close to
begin with is an achievement in itself.

Curwin Bosch was particularly influential at first-five, with the 21-year-old nearly guiding his
team to what would have been a famous win. Nevertheless, the Durbanites will have

another shot at claiming a rare victory in Kiwiland when they take on an ever-improving
Chiefs side in Hamilton.

Colin Cooper’s men did well to battle back from 16-points down to claim a draw themselves
against the Highlanders last week. With playoff qualification not entirely out of the equation
for the two-time champions, they will target the Sharks’ game as a must-win.

As mighty as the Sharks were last week, don’t be surprised if their perennial inconsistency
comes back to bite them again. The Chiefs may not have the best home record of sides this
term, but expect them to come out firing to claim a narrow win.
Verdict: Chiefs by seven-points or more
____________________________________________

Lions v Waratahs
15h05
Emirates Airline Park

To Win
Lions 7/20
Draw 28/1
Waratahs 22/10

Handicap
Lions (-7.5) 9/10
Waratahs (+7.5) 9/10

The Lions should take advantage of an out of sorts Waratahs outfit when they host the
Australian side in Johannesburg in Saturday’s final Super Rugby clash.

Daryl Gibson’s men have suffered consecutive losses to South African sides over the past
fortnight which has severely dented their confidence ahead of their second match on tour.
Having already fallen foul to the Sunwolves earlier in the season, coupled with the ongoing
Israel Folau saga, this is one footy team under immense pressure.

While the Lions haven’t necessarily fared much better this campaign (just one point
separates the 11th -placed hosts from the 12th -placed Tahs), their recent bye week should
have reinvigorated them somewhat.

Qualification remains unlikely for both outfits, but pride is still very much on the line
heading into the remaining weeks of the season. Playing at home, though, Swys de Bruin’s
charges should come away with four-log points at the very least.
Verdict: Lions by 10 or more.

Neil Morrice: UK Racing Tips - Wednesday 8 May 2019

Jockeys ride horses

Neil Morrice brings you all of his best bets from Wednesday's racing at Kelso, Chester, Southwell, Newton Abbot and Fontwell.

Kelso Best Bets

Race 1: FORTIFIED BAY (5)
Trainer: Jennie Candlish
Jockey: Sean Quinlan

If FORTIFIED BAY is anywhere near as good as when last seen in novice hurdles for Alan King he will make short work of his foes. I understand he's plenty fit enough after a more than 700-day absence and can prove an instant hit for his new connections at the main expense of Floki.

Race 5: YORKIST (3)
Trainer: Dan Skelton
Jockey: Harry Skelton

While not managing to return to the same level of form that saw him score on his debut for the Skeltons at Aintree in November, YORKIST has kept pretty smart company in four subsequent outings and performed well enough since undergoing wind surgery to suggest he can win what is sure to be a tactical contest.

Chester Best Bets

Race 1: GREAT DAME (10)
Trainer: David O'Meara
Jockey: Danny Tudhope

An inside draw is pretty much essential in the Lily Agnes Stakes, celebrating one of the fastest two-year-olds to race on the Roodee. GREAT DAME's connections couldn't have picked a better slot than gate 3 and with her early speed shining out like a beacon when she dotted up at Beverley she could be hard to catch.

Race 4: TECHNICIAN (8)
Trainer: Martyn Meade
Jockey: Frankie Dettori

With just the right profile for this, TECHNICIAN can foil a three-pronged Aidan O'Brien assault on a race that could have some bearing on the Investec Derby market. The Mastercraftsman colt is progressive, his trainer Martyn Meade excels with such horses, and the booking of Dettori has to be seen as a boon. The selection looked a tad unlucky not to win the Sandown Classic Trial and there's a good chance compensation awaits him.

Race 5: MONS STAR (6)
Trainer: Saeed Bin Suroor
Jockey: Pat Cosgrave

MONS STAR cost a king's ransom as a foal and can pay back some of that elevated price on his head by scoring in a fascinating maiden. He showed enough on his debut in a similar race at Newmarket's Craven meeting to indicate he has the ability to match his price tag. He's a rare runner here for his trainer, and is bred to handle conditions should significant rain fall at the course.

Southwell Best Bets

Race 3: NO THANKS (3) (Each Way)
Trainer: William Jarvis
Jockey: George Wood

Although he would struggle to win this on the bare evidence of three 'duck egg' outings as a juvenile, NO THANKS might well improve for being gelded since his latest start and have got into this off a lenient handicap mark. The hooded son of Derby winner Pour Moi could be a surprise packet and I shall pay to find out.

Race 4: BONNEVILLE (5)
Trainer: Rod Millman
Jockey: Theodore Ladd

Named after salt flats that hosted attempts at land speed records in the Fifties and Sixties, BONNEVILLE has some speeding up to do if he's to finally open his account, but this looks a great chance to achieve it at the twelfth attempt. He's been a little unlucky to run into foes from major stables that have thwarted him, and this race is not supported by any of the top Newmarket trainers. He should win.

Newton Abbot Best Bet

Race 5: YOU SAY WHAT (8)
Trainer: David Pipe
Jockey: Tom Scudamore

Exeter specialist YOU SAY WHAT travelled like a winner for much of the way before finishing third there on his second run back from a layoff. His jumping was in the main a joy to behold, the performance showing he's retained plenty of the ability displayed before he was forced onto the sidelines with an injury. From this mark, getting weight from all but one of his rivals, he should prove hard to beat while any rain will make things even better for him.

Fontwell Park Best Bet

Race 7: BARTON ROSE (5)
Trainer: Charlie Longsdon
Jockey: Paul O'Brien

Another ultra-consistent performer whose chance will be considerably boosted by rain, BARTON ROSE doesn't meet a horse of the calibre of her Huntingdon victor and looks nailed on to at least get into the money in this 8-runner affair. She's dropped down the weights to a tempting mark.

F1 2019: Spanish Grand Prix Preview

Formula One 2019: Season Preview

Ferrari will be looking to end Mercedes early-season dominance when the F1 field lines up for the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday the 12th of May.

It looks like Mercedes may just be marching away with the Constructor's and Drivers' title this year with the Silver Arrows boys claiming wins in the opening four races. They have also managed to register one-two finishes in all this season's races. Needless to say, Ferrari faces an uphill battle in reeling their arch rivals.

Spanish Grand Prix
Circuit Barcelona-Catalunya
Sunday 12 May

To Win Race Outright
Lewis Hamilton 27/20
Valtteri Bottas 5/2
Sebastian Vettel 7/2
Charles LeClerc 9/2
Max Verstappen 12/1
Pierre Gasly 150/1
Kimi Raikkonen 1000/1

Previous Race
Another race, another Mercedes one-two. This theme is becoming a recurring one fast with the Silver Arrows claiming the first two spots out in Azerbaijan a fortnight ago. Both Mercedes drivers have now won two races with Lewis Hamilton winning in China and Bahrain while Valtteri Bottas won in the opener in Australia and the latest Grand Prix in Azerbaijan.

Ferrari have also been racking up the podiums this season but they have been unable to get anything higher than third with Sebastian adding their third third-place accolade to the mantle by rounding out the podium in Baku. Vettel was followed across the line by the Red Bull of Max Verstappen who finished some 59 seconds before his Charles LeClerc brought the second Ferrari across the line.

The top six was rounded out by Sergio Perez while youngsters Lando Norris (8th) and Lance Stroll were sandwiched between Carlos Sainz (7th) and Kimi Raikkonen (10th).

Track
The Circuit de Catalunya offers a great blend of high and low-speed corners which really tests the reliability of the faster cars on track. While these corners require dexterous braking, they don't offer much room for overtaking as they are some of the narrowest on the calendar. As such, pole position will be a rather key factor here.

In terms of the weather for this weekend, there's a slight bit of rain being forecast for the qualifying sessions as well as race day, but at this point, there are no series showers being predicted (*article was written on Tuesday the 7th of May)

Last year saw a Mercedes one-two (would you honestly bet against this happening again?) with Hamilton claiming first and Bottas second, while third place was taken by Max Verstappen.

Value Bet - Max Verstappen -Podium Finish @ 7/4
Max has enjoyed his time in Spain third at the venue last year and first back in 2016. It's a track Red Bull cars tend to do well on as well with Daniel Ricciardo also steering a Red Bull to third place in 2017.

I fancy Red Bull's podium streak to continue in Spain this year. And at 7/4, Verstappen offers great value to add to this run.

To Win Race Outright - Lewis Hamilton @27/20
Hamilton has the best record out of all the driver on track having won three Spanish Grand Prix. He won the 2014 edition as well as the 2017 and 2018 editions. And you'd have to be a brave man to bet against him especially with the odds on him making three in a row in Spain sitting at over even money.

Super Rugby 2019: Brumbies v Sunwolves Preview

Super Rugby - players engage in a scrum

The Brumbies and Sunwolves will square off in the final Round 13 Super Rugby game on Sunday the 12th of May.

The Brumbies will be looking to keep the pressure on the Australian Conference-leading Rebels when they take on the Conference's last-placed side, the Sunwolves. The hosts head into this one in decent touch having won three of their last our fixtures, while visitors haven't won a game since they beat the Waratahs back in Round 7.

Brumbies v Sunwolves
Sunday 12 May

GIO Stadium
08:35

To Win (80 Mins)
Brumbies 1/5
Draw 28/1
Sunwolves 3/1

*Forecast Odds

Handicap
Brumbies (-12.5) 9/10

Sunwolves (+12.5) 9/10

Brumbies
The men from Canberra have enjoyed a solid month beating the Lions at home, the Stormers away and the Blues at home. There only defeat in their past four games came away against the Jaguares and they still managed to pick up a losing bonus point from that fixture.

This run of solid form has seen Dan Mckellar's men move level on points with the Conference-leading Rebels. And with the Rebels playing the Reds this weekend, a bonus point victory against the  Sunwolves could well see the Brumbies shoot up to the top of the standings.

Sunwolves
The Sunwolves have endured a far less fruitful couple of weeks, which have seen them pick up a host of losing bonus points but that elusive third victory of the season just won't come for the Japanese franchise.

The 'Wolves had a marvellous chance to register that third win last weekend but ill-discipline cost them dearly against the Reds with the Queensland side edging the game 32-26. The loss also came at a cost for the Sunwolves as in-form winger Semisi Masirewa coping a one week ban for a high tackle,

Verdict: Sunwolves (+12.5) 9/10 *Forecast Handicap
They may be missing one of their stars but I still fancy the 'Wolves to put up a real fight here. I'm rather confident they'll be able to stay within a very handy 'cap.

European Tour: British Masters Preview

Golfer admires shot

Tommy Fleetwood will host this week’s event from Hillside GC. Hillside Golf Course is quite an intriguing beast. The front nine is a beautifully manicured links experience that is very reminiscent of many of the elite Open course.

The back nine more closely resembles a wild Irish course and is considered quite a challenge. It is a coastal course that is located between a vast expanse of dunes and indigenous pinewoods. It actually has more trees than your traditional links course. The course is not overly long and will clearly be suited to those crafty links specialists that live for these events.

2019 European Tour
British Masters hosted by Tommy Fleetwood
Hillside GC Southport, England
Thursday 12 May - Sunday 12 May 2019

This event comes at a curious time in the calendar due to the rescheduling of the US PGA Tour. Next week’s PGA Championship at Bethpage Black will clearly have an impact on the fields on both sides of the Atlantic this week. The British Masters actually started life way back before World War II. The Dunlop Metropolitan Tournament was first played in 1934, and it later morphed into the Dunlop Masters in 1946. The event had the distinction of broadcasting British televisions first ever live hole-in-one- courtesy of links legend Tony Jacklin. This event was one of the most lucrative tour events throughout the 80’s but slowly started to lose significance in the contemporary age.

Tommy Fleetwood has battled to really land the killer blow this season and will be hoping to utilize this event as the ideal preparations ahead of next week’s PGA Championship. He will be joined by an impressive English contingent, with fellow Ryder Cupper Tyrell Hatton an obvious one to watch. Eddie Pepperell would have felt desperately unlucky not to make the European Ryder team last year and will return to defend his title. Elsewhere, the likes of Erik Van Rooyen and Jordan Smith bring strong form to Hillside.

Past Winners
2018: Eddie Pepperell (-9)
2017: Paul Dunne (-20)
2016: Alex Noren (-18)
2015: Matthew Fitzpatrick (-15)

Outright Betting (To Win)
Tommy Fleetwood (13/2)
Tyrell Hatton (18/1)
Eddie Pepperell (20/1)
Matt Wallace (20/1),
Jordan Smith (25/1)

Value Bets

Victor Dubuisson
To Win (40/1), To Place (17/2)
The 2014 Ryder Cup hero has slowly been working his way from a major back injury that seemed to potentially threaten his career. He just finished outside the top 10 of the China Open, which was his 4th top 20 finish since returning from that terrible injury layoff. He finished inside the top 10 at the 2014 Open at nearby Hoylake, which really underlines his ability in links conditions. He has hit about 70% of all fairways this year, making this his most accurate driving campaign since that breakthrough 2014 campaign. This should come in handy on a typically tricky links layout. He just seems irresistible at 40/1, especially when you look at the positive signs in China.

Paul Dunne
To Win (66/1), To Place (14/1)
Irishman Paul Dunne is clearly always to be factored in when links courses are considered. He memorably shared a three-way lead at the 2015 Open Championship, only to fade away poorly in the last round. The 2017 Trophee Hassan II runner-up obviously has history in this event. He won the 2017 British Masters at Close House, actually setting a record score to par and beating Rory McIlroy by three shots. He teamed up with fellow Irishman Gavin Moynahan to win last year’s GolfSixes event and he will no doubt be gearing up for a big week.  He also finished in a tie for 7th at the 2017 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

The Man to Beat

Ryan Fox
To Win (40/1), To Place (17/2)
While I was tempted to go for another British player, I have instead opted for a selection slightly outside of the box. The New Zealander actually won his first ever professional event earlier this year when he captured the World Super 6 title. But it is his form on seaside links courses over the past few years that makes him such a compelling choice. He has four top sixes in his last eight starts on the British seaside links. That includes a 2018 Irish Open playoff defeat at Ballyliffin.

PGA Tour: AT&T Byron Nelson Classic Preview

Golfer lines up iron shot

This event was one of the more contentious on last year’s tour, so it’s no surprise that many of the top players have sidestepped this one. Obviously, that also has to do with the schedule rejig. This event began its life as the Dallas Open way back in 1944, renamed as the Byron Nelson Classic in 1968.

However, the decision to move this event from Las Colinas to Trinity Forest was met with derision by some. Cottonwood was extremely popular with players and some may have felt their delicate sensibilities were being offended by a course built on the site of an old, illegal dumping site. Matt Kuchar publicly lambasted the course and you can see why some players may be phased by it.

2019 US PGA Tour | T&T Byron Nelson Classic
Trinity Forest Golf Course, Dallas, Texas
Thursday 9 May - Sunday 12 May 2019

As designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, Trinity is very much antithetical to what the players experience on tour. The onus on strategically picking apart the course means that certain lines will be preferable to others, with the middle of some fairways, not ideal locations. There is also a distinctive lack of primary rough, with waste areas awaiting those who stray extremely far off course. The heavily contoured greens will also demand much from the player in what can only be described as a thinking man’s golf course. Extremely wet conditions contributed to a birdie fest last year and conditions are once again expected to be conducive to good scoring.

Brooks Koepka will be looking to muscle this course and dominate ahead of his PGA Championship defence. Jordan Spieth is desperate for something to click in a year characterized by a complete collapse in his putting stroke. Defending champion Aaron Wise will return while there have been some encouraging signs of late for Japanese superstar Hideki Matsuyama. Elsewhere, the likes of Patrick Reed and Henrik Stenson will add some gloss to a fairly truncated field.

Value Bets

Sungjae Im
To Win (40/1), To Place (17/2)

Sungjae Im dominated the Web.com Tour last season from week one. There are many in the game who have tipped him for much bigger things. He has backed that up with an excellent rookie campaign with three top-four finishes thus far this season. Only five guys teeing it up this week sit ahead of Sungjae Im in the FedEx Cup standings. Top 5’s at the Bayhill and the Valspar Championship speak to his obvious potential. He also finished in a tie for 7th at the Corales Puntacana event, highlighting his ability to take advantage of a diminished field: the Corales event was a corollary event to the WGC Match-Play.

Rory Sabbatini
To Win (50/1), To Place (11/1)

Never a stranger to controversy, Rory Sabbatini has actually been in the midst of a solid period of form. The South African - oh scratch that, Slovakian - hasn’t missed a cut since Pebble Beach, with his results really heating up over the last few weeks. He finished inside the top 10 at the RBC Heritage prior to a third-place finish at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. He followed that up with another top 20 at Quail Hollow last week. The outspoken Sabbatini won the 2009 Byron Nelson and looks a steal at 50/1.

The Man to Beat

Brooks Koepka
To Win (13/2), To Place (14/10)

Generally speaking, I try to avoid favourites, especially at this kind of price. But three-time Major Champion Koepka is a machine and loves events prior to Major Championships. He belongs to that slightly antiquated group that enjoys playing the week prior to a Major Championship. He has finished inside the top six in four of his last eight starts the week prior to a Major Championship. He also finished runner-up last time out at Augusta. One also just has to look at the courses where he has won Major Championships to see his suitability for this course. Erin Hills is similarly wide and tactical. It would also appear that the long hitters will prosper as they did last season, with uncharacteristically wet conditions likely to soften the course.

ATP Tour: Mutua Madrid Open | Selected Round of 32 Matches

Mutua Madrid Open | Selected Round of 32 Matches

We take a look at the selected round of 32 fixtures from the ATP Tour's Mutua Madrid Open taking place at Caja Magica (Outdoor Clay) on the 8th of May 2019.

2019 ATP Tour | Masters 1000 Series
Mutua Madrid Open | Caja Magica (Outdoor Clay)
Selected Round of 32 Matches | 8 May 2019

Phillip Kohlschreiber (6/10)
vs Frances Tiafoe (13/10)
This promises to be your stereotypical baseline brawl, with two generations coming together for a potentially thrilling encounter. Frances Tiafoe represents the brash new wave of contemporary tennis talent. The big-serving American is actually of Sierra Leone stock originally and in 2018 became the youngest American since Andy Roddick to claim an ATP title: he won the Delray Beach title. He also showed off some encouraging all-court potential in 2018 by reaching the Estoril Open Final on clay. John Isner claimed that outside of Novak Djokovic, Tiafoe was the player who seemed to return his formidable serve the best. He just needs to find some consistency in his game.  He started the year with that excellent quarter-final run in Melbourne. He also has a quarter-final at the stacked Miami event. But outside of those results, it has been more of a grind for the young American. He reached the quarters in Estoril last week and will be hoping to find some more clay-court magic this week.

On the other end of the spectrum, you have 35-year-old German veteran Phillip Kohlschreiber. The venerable German has managed to eke out every bit of talent from his fairly diminutive frame. The eight-time ATP winner actually owns six titles on clay. He has also lost in six finals on this surface, highlighting his capacity to outlast far younger opponents. He started the year in decent style, reaching the semi-finals in Auckland. A run to the final 16 of Indian Wells further underlined his evergreen status. He has already defeated World Number One Novak Djokovic, which actually preceded a three-set defeat to the Serbian in that epic Monte Carlo Masters encounter. He reached the quarterfinals in Estoril and will not fear anyone as this event progresses.

This will actually be the first-ever meeting between these two. Kohlschreiber will need to whether the onslaught that is Frances Tiafoe’s huge serve. I think that if he is able to withstand the opening salvos of this match, the experienced German will have a chance of beating the Next Gen star.

Rafael Nadal (1/10)
vs Felix Aguer-Aliasseme (5/1)

If ever there was a time to take on clay-court maestro Rafael Nadal, this may well be it. The five-time Madrid champion is yet to register a tournament victory in 2019, recording back-to-back semi-final defeats at Barcelona and Monte Carlo. Furthermore, the Spanish matador was feeling under the weather to start the week, choosing to eschew the standard press junkets this week. Nadal is the king of clay-court tennis and will no doubt enter this game as a firm favourite. But his recent run of disappointment coupled with illness could spell danger for Nadal. Dominic Theim seemed to actually play him off the court in Barcelona. Furthermore, he is coming up against one of the hottest young prospects in men’s tennis: Felix Auger Aliasseme.

Young Canadian Felix Auger Aliasseme is riding the crest of a Canadian tennis wave. The likes of Bianca Andreescu and Denis Shapovalov have helped raise the profile of Canadian tennis this season. He actually beat fellow Canadian Shapovalov in the opening round here. The 2016 junior US Open champion has had a brilliant year, reaching the Rio Open final on clay. In the process, he became the youngest ever ATP 500 finalist. But certainly, the highlight of his season was his semi-final showing at the Miami Open. He also managed to beat Stefanos Tsitsipas- the likely natural successor to the current big three- at Indian Wells. He seems remarkably composed for a man of only 18 years.

It’s perhaps not too surprising that these two have never met. Nadal is clearly the huge favourite and will more than likely sweep the hopeful usurper aside. But there’s enough in here to suggest that there is a possibility for a real upset here, especially with Nadal at an expected 1/10.

WTA Tour: Mutua Madrid Open | Selected Round of 32 and 16 Matches

Tennis player holds racquet

The 2019 WTA Tour continues in Spain with the Mutua Madrid Open taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday the 7th and 8th of May 2019. Check out our full betting preview below.

2019 WTA Tour | WTA Premier Mandatory
Mutua Madrid Open | Caja Magica (Outdoor Clay)
Selected Round of 32 and 16 Matches | 7-8 May 2019

Round of 32 | 7 May 2019

Angelique Kerber (6/10)
vs Petra Martic (23/20)
Current Wimbledon Champion Angelique Kerber knows that all she needs is a French Open title to complete the career Grand Slam. Clay has never been her favourite surface and she will be hoping to defy expectations on that Grand Slam quest. She reached the quarter-finals last week in Stuttgart and has generally been quite consistent this season. Clearly, that run to the final of Indian Wells was the highlight of her year thus far. But one wonders if the physical vagaries of playing so many events of late may catch up to the popular German as the year progresses. She looked laboured in Germany and this may represent a great opportunity for her less fancied opponent.

The 28 year-old Croatian, Petra Martic, has enjoyed a fairly amazing return from what looked to be a career-threatening back injury. She came back last year and went into the French Open with a 17-3 win/loss record. She would beat both Madison Keys and Sevatsova en route to a creditable fourth-round showing. She reached the final in Bucharest and clearly has an affinity with the clay-courts. She is actually in the midst of some really potent clay-court form, flying nicely under the radar. She reached the semi-finals of the Charleston Open prior to that Istanbul Cup victory. The Croatian already beat Garbine Muguruza in the opening round and will look to continue her giant-killing ways with this match.

This will be their 4th meeting, with Petra Martic actually leading that particular head-to-head count 2-1. But it’s really hard to make any sound deductions based on that: they last met way back in 2012 at Roland Garros. I just have a sneaking suspicion that Martic is the one to beat here. Her clay-court form has been sound and Kerber does have a penchant for crashing out early to dark horses with some form.

Round of 16 | 8 May 2019

Kiki Bertens (3/10)
vs Anastasija Sevatsova (21/10)
This should be a fascinating battle between two of last year’s sleeper hits. It also should be a gruelling battle between two arch baseliners who thrive on this surface. 27-year-old Dutch star Kiki Bertens has perhaps pushed on a bit better than her Latvian opponent this season. Bertens enjoyed a stellar 2018 campaign, claiming titles in Charleston, Korea and Canada. She showed an ability on all surfaces, which included a stellar run to last year’s final here: she would go on to lose to her Czech nemesis Petra Kvitova. Bertens has remained resolute this season, already claiming a title in St Petersburg. She reached the semi-finals in Stuttgart last time out and has already overcome a fairly tricky draw thus far. She beat Siniakova and Ostapenko thus far and will be looking to build up a head of steam with the clay-court season in full swing.

29-year-old Latvian Anastasija Sevatsova has seen off both Flipkens and Buzarnesco thus far. This, however, will be a particularly tough encounter for Sevatsova. As I said earlier, Sevatsova enjoyed a tremendously consistent 2018. She reached three finals and managed to win the Bucharest Open on clay. She has actually won two titles on clay and uses her fantastic mobility to her advantage. But her 2019 season has been beset by fairly poor form. She hasn’t managed to get past the quarter-final stage yet this season. But she has proved a dogged all-court competitor of late and she will be feeling quietly confident going into this match. And there is a weird statistical anomaly to consider this week.

This will be the third meeting between these two, with each and every match taking place at the Madrid Open. In 2017 it was the Latvian who won, while Kiki Bertens exacted her revenge last year. So this match will be both their third ever meeting and third consecutive meeting in this very event. Bertens has won 7 of her last 10 while Sevatsova has only won 5 in 10. Bertens is something of a no-brainer for this one and could be worth a stab to win in straight sets at 17/20.

Magic Tips Best Bets

Race 1: EHSAAN(2)
Jockey: R Simons   - Trainer: M De Kock

EHSAAN put up a solid post maiden effort last time out, when showing plenty of speed and just tiring late on. He enjoyed his penultimate start around the bend, when finding a decent draw and he gets ano- ther fair draw for this step up in trip today. He is bred for it and should be the one they all have to beat.

EHSAAN(2)
Race 2: MASAAQAAT(7)
Jockey: M Yeni   - Trainer: M De Kock

MASAAQAAT has been close up in all three of her career starts thus far and she has found solid support in the betting on all three occasions. The well bred daughter of Snitzel may have needed that comeback run last time out, when stepping up in trip for the first time and she gets the blinkers fitted today for the extra 50m. She is drawn well and looks the likely victor here.

MASAAQAAT(7)
Race 3: STOCKBRIDGE(1)
Jockey: R Simons  - Trainer: M De Kock

STOCKBRIDGE has done everything but win in his last 3 starts over the 1400m and he drops back to the 1200m today, where he should be much better suited. The well bred son of Var has plenty of speed and from that useful draw, he looks the right one here.

STOCKBRIDGE(1)

TOP BET
Race 4: EIGHTFOLDS LASS(1)
Jockey: G Lerena  - Trainer: AJ Soma

EIGHTFOLDS LASS has her peak run after a rest today, after showing up well in both comeback runs. She has already had one attempt at this trip, in her penultimate start when going down a head to Jacko Boy , but if repeating that effort with Lerena up today she should go very close.

EIGHTFOLDS LASS(1)

VALUE BET (EACH WAY) FOR TODAY:
Race 8: ITSMYDARLIN(10)
Jockey: S Khumalo   - Trainer :D Sham

ITSMYDARLING has been going the right way since she returned from a short rest three starts back. She has dropped to a much more competitive rating and she is backed up by a solid record over this trip. With Khumalo retaining the ride from that solid last start, she looks the one to beat.

ITSMYDARLIN(10)
